Mehdi Hosseini is an Iranian composer of contemporary classical music.

Mehdi Hosseini was born in 1979 in Tehran. He first studied composition under the Iranian composer, Farhad Fakhreddini, and then continued his studies in Russia at St. Petersburg State Conservatory with Alexander Minatsakaniyan and in Austria with Nigel Osborne. He also pursued musical studies under Tatiana Bershadskaya at St. Petersburg State Conservatory, where he earned a D.M.A. in composition with Sergei Slonimsky.

Hosseini's work encompasses a whole range of musical genres. His musicological field of research is the rich and diverse folk music of different Persian provinces. As a theoretician, Hosseini devotes himself to studying the nature and structure of the uniquely Persian phenomenon of the magham. His works show the strong influence of monodic music, which he interprets in a completely new and modern way. Hosseini makes use of his musicological research in works such as “Baluch,” “Taleshi Hava,” “Concerto for String Quartet,” and “Peshtpa,” all of which display the influence of Persian folk music.

Mehdi Hosseini’s music is regularly performed at such festivals as The St. Petersburg Musical Spring, The Contemporary East and West Music Festival, The St. Petersburg Renaissance, The Contemporary Past, and Sound Ways, and interpreted by the St. Petersburg State Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, the St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra, and other prestigious orchestras. A number of his works have been published by the Compozitor Publishing House in St. Petersburg.
