Jonathan Kolm earned his DMA in Composition from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007. His work Terra Secundum was premiered in 2009 by the new music ensemble IonSounds and hailed for being "fluent in its diversity" (Mark Kanny, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Classical Music Critic, 12/21/09). A review of his music appeared was the subject of a July 2009 entry on the widely read Chamber Music Today blog. Concerning his award winning chamber piece Quantum Music, the author stated "The textures are interesting throughout, and the narrative arc is accessible and deeply moving."His music has won prizes in many national competitions including the 2009 Swan Prize in Music Composition, the Percussive Arts Society Composition Competition, the National Federation of Music Clubs Competition, Voices of Change Composition Contest, the Austin Peay State Composition Competition, and he has been commissioned by a wide range of artists and ensembles. He participated in the VocalEssence/American Composers Forum workshop for new choral music in 2008, working with composer Daniel Godfrey, artistic director Philip Brunelle and VocalEssence. He also was finalist in the Young New Yorkers’ Chorus 2006 Competition and was commissioned to compose a new choral work that was premiered in June 2007 in New York City.
