Born in Seoul, Korea, Ha-Yang Kim's musical life draws from a range of western classical music, American experimentalism, rock, electronic, noise, avant-improv, to non-western musical sources. Ha-Yang's music is inspired by acoustic phenomena, ritual process, and characterized by an organic lyricism of sound. Her music has been performed in the US, Russia, Turkey, Morocco, Cuba, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Performers include the JACK Quartet, members of the International Contemporary Ensemble, and Odd Appetite. Her awards, grants and commissions include the Jerome Foundation, Van Lier Fellowship, Meet the Composer, Argosy Foundation, and Trust for Mutual Understanding. She is also active as a curator of creative new music concerts and events, and contributed an article in the ARCANA Volume III, (edited by John Zorn). "Ama", a CD of her own compositions is released on Tzadik.
