Melody, harmony, rhythm and counterpoint still reign. Never attracted by 20th Century deviations but influenced by composers pursuing the above attributes, principally French, Russian and English. e.g Ravel, Bartok, Prokofiev, Walton, Tippett, Finzi etc. Also Gershwin, Brubeck, Sondheim, John Williams (film composer), Bernstein and that host of brilliant 'popular' composers who write real music.
