Sebastian Chang (b. 1988) is an American composer and pianist from Orange County, California. He has received numerous awards and accolades for his compositions, including three BMI Student Composer Awards (2002, 2005, 2007) and five ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Awards (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006). His compositions have been played by the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, the USC Symphony Orchestra, the New York Art Ensemble, and the Collage New Music Chamber Ensemble in Boston. He graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in 2007 with a B.M. in Music Composition, and graduated from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music in 2010 with an M.M. in Music Composition. He has studied composition privately with Jennifer Higdon, Richard Danielpour, and Donald Crockett.
Other compositional awards include the New York Art Ensemble Young Composer Award (2004), the Collage New Music Young Composer Competition (2004), three national first prizes in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Student Composition Competition (2000, 2002, 2005), and a first prize in the Young Composers Awards by the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts (2002). Sebastian is a recipient of the 2002 Davidson Fellow Laureate scholarship from the Davidson Institute for Talent Development, a 2003 Pinnacle Project Scholar in music composition, and is a finalist for the Presidential Scholar in the Arts.
Sebastian has performed throughout the U.S., Asia, and Canada as a featured piano soloist. He has performed and been interviewed twice on NPR’s From the Top, hosted by Chris O’Reilly. He has been a two-time Gold Medal winner in the Southern California Junior Bach Festival, and has won first prize in the Los Angeles Liszt Competition, first prize in both the piano open solo and the Young Pianist competition at the Southwestern Youth Music Festival. Sebastian has performed as a piano soloist with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, the California Symphony, the Reno Philharmonic, the Southwestern Youth Music Festival Orchestra, the Orange County High School of the Arts Chamber Orchestra, the Asia America Symphony Orchestra, and the Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra.
