After being influenced by the music of Bartok and Scoenberg his musical language has progressed into a personal post-modernistic one wherein harmonic ambiguity and polystylism are important ingredients. In the 70's De Smet attended the Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (Darmstadt), the Gaudeamus Music week (Bilthoven, Rotterdam), the Amerivan Seminar on new American Music (Salzburg), Biennale of Venice (Colloque Musica-Sintesi)wher he took part and assisted at workshops and lectures by Ligeti, Cage,Stockhausen, Xenakis, and others. His works (symphonic, vocal and chamber music) have been performed by great performers such as Siegfried Palm, Harry Sparnaay, Fernando Grillo, Mark Drobinsky, Guido Arbonelli, Paul Dombrecht in nearly all European countries and also in USA, China, South Corea, Brazil, Mexico, Iran.
