Annelies Van Parys (°1975) studied composition at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent with Luc Brewaeys. She received the prizes Flanders-Québec and “Jeugd en Muziek” and was laureate of the Tactus International Composition Seminar with Einklang for orchestra. Her “Phrases V” for ensemble was officially selected for the WMD in Zagreb.
She has been performed by almost all major Belgian Ensembles (Spectra, Champ d’Action, Ictus, Hermes, I Solisti…), lots of ensembles abroad (SMCQ Montreal, Cantus Zagreb, Ensemble 88 Holland, NYNME New York…) as well as most Belgian orchestras.
Her first Symphony “Carillon” was written for deFilharmony and conducted by Sian Edwards. “Ruhe”, a Music Theatre performance with music of Schubert and Van Parys in a concept of Josse De Pauw was performed by Collegium Vocale Ghent on almost every big theatre festival in Europe and on festivals in Sidney and New York.
Orchestra De Volharding (Amsterdam) premiered “Canzon” for large ensemble. Her second Symphony “Les Ponts” was written for The Symphonic Orchestra of Flanders and conducted by Otto Tausk. The New York New Music Ensemble premiered “Fragrances” in Leuven as well as in the Merkin Concert Hall in NY. She was also as a guest on the Gaudeamus Musicweek in Holland with “Poièma”.
Since 2007 she’s composer in residence with Music Theatre Transparant that produced with VocaalLAB Nederland her first full evening Music Theatre Piece: An Index of Memories. Currently she’s writing for the same partners music on Oresteïa, a co-production with the Asko/Schoenberg Ensemble.
Annelies Van Parys is teaching formal analysis and orchestration at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.
