Aaron Blumenfeld is a composer, author, teacher, lecturer and concert pianist who has worked extensively in three fields of music; classical, jazz, and Jewish music. In jazz,as a result of years of research into the art of jazz piano improvisation, culminating in a Master;s degree in composition and theory from Rutgers University (New Brunswick) Mr. Blumenfeld produced his BARRELHOUSE PIANO CONCERTO for which he received a grant from the New Jersey Council on the Arts in 1972. His BARRELHOUSE CONCERTO-SUITE, derived from this work was performed in the bay area (California) in 1980. He is the author of two popular published books on the art of blues piano improvisation.
During his three year sojourn in Israel (1974-1977) he taught jazz piano at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem and performed many concerts, notably at the Tel Aviv museum and at the Tel Aviv and
Bar Ilan universities.
Mr. Blumenfeld taught a popular accredited course called FREE IMPROVISATION AT THE PIANO at he University of California, Berkeley Extension School for twenty years and blues piano at the Berkeley (California) Jazz School for five years.
Prior to his work in the field of jazz, Mr. Blumenfeld worked extensively in the field of Jewish music as a composer, teacher, cantor and conductor of synagogue choirs. He has composed several large symphonic works on Jewish themes, most notably EZK'ROH: A SYMPHONIC POEM (performed under the auspices of the Jewish Federation of the East Bay) as well as his HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL SYMPHONIC POEM and his HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL CANTATA, all of which have been performed in the California bay area. He has composed much chamber music on Jewish themes, including SONG OF SONGS FOR SOPRANO & PIANO, FIVE SONGS FOR BARITONE & PIANO ON POEMS BY SHLOMO IBN GABIROL and HASHIUR (THE LESSON): A ONE ACT CHAMBER OPERA. Recitals of songs from his two Yiddish operas; PAGIEL & BATHSHEVA (2003) and RACHEL (2006) have recently been performed in the bay area.
Mr. Blumenfeld is primarily a classical composer. His classical compositions include eleven piano concertos, three of which have been performed, as well as duo and trio sonatas for all or the standard orchestral instruments. He has composed much vocal music, including thirty five songs for soprano & piano on poems by Berkeley poets and tens songs for tenor and piano on poems by Marc Widershien (which are illustrated in the poet's published book, SONGS OF SURVIVAL.) He is also the author of a book on music theory called, " A New Perspective on Twelve Tone Harmony."
All of Mr. Blumenfeld's original manuscripts are in the music archives of the University of California, Berkeley.
