Romanian born, Sergiu Shapira completed his Master Degree in Composition at the Bucharest State Academy of Music (1956). In his native country, he was awarded with two prizes of the “Composers’ Fund of Romania” for Sonatina and Capriccio, both piano works.
Established in Israel in 1961, S. Shapira joined the Faculty Staff of Jerusalem Music Academy in the Theory Department. Shapira’s Ph.D. was accorded by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for his comprehensive research on the topic Artistic-Educational Piano Music.
Shapira's works include orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal music. His works were performed and published in Israel, U.S.A., France, Germany, Belgium, Italy and others. In 1999, the composer was awarded with the Prize of "International Composition Contest for Clarinet", category Clarinet Solo, for his work A Talk with the Unseen. His Sonata for Cello Solo was selected to represent Israel at the "International Cello Festival, Bruxelles 2005". It also represented Israel at the Asian Music Festival 2011 held in Taiwan.
