Carlos Marecos (b. 1963, Lisbon) graduated in Composition, in 1999, at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, where he studied with Eurico Carrapatoso, António Pinho Vargas and Christopher Bochmann.
He won the composition prize “Prémio Lopes-Graça in 1999 and again in 2000.

Marecos has received commissions from numerous important cultural entities including Culturgest, the Gulbenkian Foundation Centre for Modern Art (ACART), the World Exposition - Lisbon 1998, OrchestrUtopica, the Estoril International Music Festival, and Cistermúsica - Alcobaça Music Festival.

He directs the chamber ensemble “Ensemble Portátil”, which is dedicated to contemporary repertoire and modern settings of Portuguese folk music. In the areas of theatre and dance, he has worked with the stage directors João Brites, Raul Atalaia, Luís Miguel Cintra, as well as the choreographers Madalena Victorino and Vera Mantero.
Since 2002, Marecos has been developing staged works regularly with a team of artists including the soprano Margarida Marecos, the stage director Paulo Lages, the actor Guilherme Filipe, the set designer Acácio de Carvalho, and the costume designer Manuela Bronze. Together, the following productions were staged:
- La Serva Padrona/A Criada Patroa (2002); a modern version of the intermezzo muicalle of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, with orchestration by Marecos. This production was supported by the Ministry of Culture/Portuguese Institute for Performing Arts.
- Caminho ao Céu” (2003), musical theatre; commissioned by Culturgest to celebrate its 10th anniversary, and staged by Paulo Lages.
- O FIM – Ópera Íntima” (2004), a chamber opera with libretto by Paulo Lages, based on the play by António Patrício; the premier was held at the Cascais Cultural Center, with the support of the Ministry of Culture/Arts Institute.

Outside Portugal, his music has been performed in Spain, France, England, Denmark, Colombia and the United States.

He is currently earning a doctorate in musical research at the University of Aveiro, with the composers João Pedro Oliveira and Christopher Bochmann, with a scholarship from the Foundation for Science and Technology.
He teaches composition and analysis at the Escola Superior de Música in Lisbon and at the Conservatoire Dom Dinis in Odivelas.


Carlos Marecos nasceu em Lisboa em 1963. Licenciou-se em Composição na Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa em 1999, onde estudou, entre outros, com Eurico Carrapatoso, António Pinho Vargas e Christopher Bochmann.
É director musical do “Ensemble Portátil” com o qual tem desenvolvido um trabalho na área da música contemporânea e na harmonização de música tradicional portuguesa.
Foi-lhe atribuído o Prémio Lopes Graça de Composição por duas vezes, nas edições de 1999 e de 2000.
Tem recebido encomendas de diversas entidades como a Culturgest, o Serviço Acarte da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, a Expo 98 de Lisboa, OrquestrUtópica, Festival Internacional de Música do Estoril, Cistermúsica - Festival de Música de Alcobaça, entre outras.
Tem colaborado com o teatro e a dança contemporânea, com os encenadores Paulo Lages, João Brites, Raul Atalaia, Luís Miguel Cintra e José Russo e as coreógrafas Madalena Victorino e Vera Mantero.
Desde 2002 Marecos tem desenvolvido um trabalho regular com peças encenadas com uma equipa de artistas como a soprano Margarida Marecos, o actor e encenador Paulo Lages, o actor Guilherme Filipe, o cenógrafo Acácio de Carvalho e a figurinista Manuela Bronze.
A sua música tem sido apresentada em Portugal, Espanha, França, Inglaterra, Dinamarca, Colômbia e EUA.
Encontra-se a realizar o doutoramento na Universidade de Aveiro, sob a orientação de João Pedro Oliveira e Christopher Bochmann, como bolseiro da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia.
Lecciona actualmente Composição e Análise na Escola Superior de Música em Lisboa e no Conservatório de Música D. Dinis em Odivelas.
