Diplomas in piano and in conducting in Basel. Musicological studies at the Universities of Basel and Heidelberg. 1970-1973, studies and work in the USA, including conducting and coaching at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, at the Santa Fe Summer Opera, at the Aspen Music Festival and studies at the University of California in Berkeley (Master of Arts in Composition).

1973 – 1987, director of the Music School of the Basel Music Academy. 1974-1987, president of the concert series " Kammerkunst Basel". 1984-1990, President of Jeunesses Musicales de Suisse. From 1987, director of the Lucerne Conservatory. 1999-2001, founding rector of the Musikhochschule Luzern. 1987-2002, artistic co-director of the Lucerne Master Courses of the International Music Festival Lucerne. Since 1989, president of the jury of the Concours du Festival de Musiques Sacrées de Fribourg (Suisse). Since 2003, president of the Johannes Brahms-Chamber Music Competition of the Gdansk Music Academy. Since 2004, member of the research committee of the Swiss Science Foundation. From 2000-2006 representative for the Swiss Music Colleges within the Association Européenne des Conservatoires (Utrecht). Several publications on music, music performance and research.

Bräm's ca. 150 works cover all categories of compositions, among them chamber music works (5 string quartets and several instrumental works with solo voice); 14 orchestral works (some also with solo instruments, for example the Concerto for Violin and ten Brass); the Oratorios "Luci e ombre" (1996) and “Transitions” (2007/08) and the mime-opera "Il Gong magico" (2002). His chamber opera “Aloise: C’est beau le rouge, vous savez” has been premiered in spring 2010.

Composition commissions from, among others, Pro Helvetia, City of Basel, Lucerne Festival, Swiss Radio DRS, Radio de la Suisse Romande, the Baltic Philharmonic Gdansk (Poland), Fribourg Festival for the BBC Singers. Bräm holds the Edwin Fischer-Prize and the Prize for Culture and Arts of the City of Lucerne (2005).

Performances of his compositions throughout Switzerland as well as abroad (among others, in Buenos Aires, Danzig, Leipzig, New York, Paris, Rome, Siena and Washington D.C.).
Retrospective concerts in Moscow (1992) and Krakow (1997), Composer-in-Residence at the Hokuto Festival in Japan (2006), guest composer 2008 in Münster (Westfalia, Germany).

Regular conducting activities in Switzerland and abroad (with over 10 CD recordings). Principal Conductor of the "Young Philharmonic of Central Switzerland" (1987-2007). Head of the department for orchestral conducting at the Musikhochschule Luzern. Prof. emeritus since 2006 from the Musikhochschule Luzern. Master courses in conducting in Teplice (Czech Republic) , Kosice (Slovak Republic) and Buenos Aires. From 1976-2009, permanent conductor of the Regio-Chorus (Binningen/Basel). Artistic Director of the “Musiktage Valendas” since 2007.
