Ted Vives (b. 1964) originally from Auburn, Alabama, began music studies at the age of 4, taking piano and theory lessons from Edgar and Dorothy Glyde. His musical interests changed to trombone performance and composition upon entering the public school system. Vives holds bachelor’s degrees in both composition and music education from Florida State University where he studied with John Boda and Charles Carter. He also holds a Masters of Music in Composition and a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Florida where he studied with Budd Udell and John D. White. He has taught in the public schools in Florida and has served as a clinician at band and music camps in many states. In 2003, his “…and they pealed more loud and deep” was awarded first prize in the North Cheshire (UK) Concert Band Composition Competition. In 2004, his fanfare for band “For the Fair and the Brave” was premiered at the Sydney Opera House by the Tallahassee Winds while on their Australian Tour, with the composer conducting. Dr. Vives’ compositions and arrangements have been performed worldwide and are published by Manduca Music Publications and Survives Music.

Dr. Vives has served on the adjunct faculty at the Los Alamos branch of the University of New Mexico. He has also taught music theory and history at the Contemporary Music Program of the College of Santa Fe in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He performs as principal trombone with both the Los Alamos Symphony and the Santa Fe Community Orchestra and teaches low brass instruments privately, and is musical director of the Los Alamos Community Winds. He has also served on the executive boards of several arts and music organizations in the Northern New Mexico region. Currently, he is a stay-at-home dad and he resides in Los Alamos, New Mexico with his wife, Paula and children, Alex and Abby.
