David Evan Jones composes chamber music, chamber operas, neo-Balkan jazz, and computer music. His early theoretical and compositional work focused on structural relationships between phonetics and music and culminated in electro acoustic compositions (e.g. Scritto available on CD from Wergo Records) and compositions for instruments with electronics (e.g. Still Life Dancing and Still Life in Wood & Metal, both available on CD from Centaur Records). More recently Jones has composed works for chamber ensembles without electronics and produced a CD of his Neo-Balkan Jazz and Concert Music for Centaur Records. He has produced two chamber operas, Bardos and The Rehearsal, for which he wrote both libretto and music. Bardos, was premiered in 2004 by the Seoul Contemporary Opera Company at Hoam Hall, Seoul, Korea.
Jones has worked extensively in computer music, composing in residence at the Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) in Stockholm, at L'Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) in Paris, and at Bregman Electronic Music Studio at Dartmouth College (USA) where he co-founded, with Jon Appleton, the Dartmouth graduate program in Electro-Acoustic Music. He has been honored by a first prize award in the Premio Ancona International Composition Competition (Italy), first prize in the national competition sponsored by the American New Music Consortium, and first prize in the MACRO International Composition Competition (USA). He has received Honorable Mentions in the Prix Ars Electronica, Austria, and in the Bourges (France) Electro-Acoustic Music Competition.
