Phil Sawyer started his musical career as lead guitarist and lead singer in various bands
including les Fleur de Lys and Shotgun Express (which became Fleetwood Mac). He joined
the Spencer Davis Group when he was 18 to replace Stevie Winwood, toured with them and
wrote a number of songs for the band.
In 1970, he left to concentrate on classical music: he studied composition, harmony and
orchestration at the Guildhall with James Stobbard.
Phil also worked as a songwriter and producer with various artists including Florie Palmer and
Sandie Shaw. He subsequently wrote music for TV and Radio commercials, corporate films
and documentaries (such as ‘The Other Bomb’, ‘Chain of Tears’, ‘The Fuhrer’ ,‘Oil Fires’,
‘Pompeii’ ). Phil also wrote music for a number of feature films including ‘The Sleepwalker’ ,
‘The Enchanted’, ‘The Wooden Camera’ , incidental music for ‘Twenty One’ and ‘Happily
Never After” and the end titles song for ‘Tarzan and Jane’.
He created the band Beautiful World that was signed by WEA following the success of two
songs especially written for Timotei commercials. His albums ‘In Existence’ and ‘Forever’ were
sold internationally.
Phil received the ‘Best Original Music Award’ at the British Television Craft Awards in 1995
and 1996.
More recently Phil has scored the music for the 13 part series ‘Gorilla School’ for Discovery
Networks Europe and Aqua Vita Films , which was broadcast on Animal Planet in spring 2010. ”
